DO (K)it YOURSELF!

1. Supplies you need:

Fabric needed  ( for the biggest size ): 35 cm height x 80 cm width / Elastic: width 0,5 cm

Size     Elastic for the waist    Elastic for the legs ( cut 2 )

0-3 m               40 cm                            26 cm

3-6 m               42 cm                            29 cm

6-12 m             45 cm                            31 cm

12-24 m           49 cm                            34 cm

You can adjust waist and leg elastic length according to your baby’s needs ( e.g., for big legs add more elastic; for skinny legs, reduce the lenth ). Elastic has to hold but never be too tight

2. Download the pattern ( click Download ) ( 2 pages, DIN-A4 )

Pint a copy in paper ( 2 pages )

3. Select the right size and identify the line that represents it in the pattern

4. Cut along the pattern pieces

5. Fold the fabric as shown below, and line up the FOLD edge indicated on the patterns with the fold of the fabric ( Press the folds in the fabric before placing the patterns )

Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric, or put heavy objects on top ( glasses, cans…) to avoid them shifting around

Transfer the pieces ( draw ) to the fabric using tailor’s chalk ( it will vanish when washing ) Make sure you draw all the marks in the pattern ( notches )

Take off the pattern pieces and cut the fabric using sharp scissors

The Diaper Cover pieces are cut and ready to be sewn ( hand sewing or using sewing machine )

6. Overcast all raw edges to prevent unravelling of the fabric in seams, or cut the edges with pinking shears scissors instead

7. Place FRONT on top of BACK, right sides facing, and align A ( inside leg )

Pin together, baste ( optional ) and sew at 1 cm from the edge

Separate the pieces and press the seam open

8. Fold B ( leg hole line )1 cm, press and pin as you go. Repeat all the way, in both legs

 Baste and sew the fold

Don’t panic if the seams doesn’t look perfect, or if the fold is not uniform… You will gather the leg holes, and you won’t notice the imperfections :)

9. See the chart (step 1) “elastic for the legs” to check the length you need. Cut it and attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic

The leg holes you have sewn ( B ) have openings in the sides ( to get the elastic in and out and gather the leg holes )

Insert and push the end of elastic with the safety pin through the opening

Use the safety pin to pull and guide the elastic through the leg hole. Fabric will gather as you go

Don’t let the other end of the elastic go through the leg hole: pin it in place

Pull until the safety pin comes out the other side of the leg hole

Pin the elastic in place and detach the safety pin

Secure the elastic with some stitches

Repeat step 9 in the other leg hole

10. Fold the diaper cover from A side, placing FRONT on top of BACK, right sides together: align C and match the notches

Pin, baste ( optional ) and sew C with a 1 cm seam

Open the Diaper Cover and press the seam open

11. Now it’s time to sew the waistline:  Work from the wrong side, and start at C ( the seam you’ve sewn in step 14 ): Fold WAIST 1 cm, press and pin

Go on until you’ve done all waistline

Baste ( optional ) and sew the waistline fold

Cut the elastic length you need ( see chart, step 1, “Elastic for the waist” ). Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic

Repeat step 9 to get the elastic in and out and gather the WAIST

12. Turn the Diaper Cover to the wrong side, and close it: align FRONT and BACK from C side, pin, baste ( optional ) and sew at 1cm from the edge

Press the seam open

13. Turn the Diaper Cover to the right side. Congrats! You're done!
